The title of Arvo Pärt’s most monumental choral work alludes to ancient ecclesiastical texts about penance. In 1998 He forged it into a reflection on the 750th birthday of the Dom in Cologne. This canon stands out for its simplicity and strict concentration. Pärt has a particular affinity with the Church Slavonic penance texts. Long, low humming tones conjure up an incantatory mood. With short silences he inserts meditative full stops and commas. The glow of voices floating around one another is bewitching. And Cappella Amsterdam and conductor Daniel Reuss elevate this ‘Kanon Pokajanen’ into a gripping event.
