Claudio Monteverdi’s reputation as an innovator is all down to ‘L’Orfeo’, the first true opera in history, which marked the beginning of the Baroque period in 1607. Monteverdi’s recipe was simple: from now on, music had to support the emotions of the text. No story was more fitting for this than the myth of Orpheus, who made the gods jealous with his superhuman musicality. With an unparalleled feeling for tragedy in both text and music, Monteverdi demonstrates why the Italians have always been opera fans. Led by conductor and musicologist Leonardo García Alarcón, the Cappella Mediterranea specialises in Baroque operas. They share the stage with the multi award-winning Chœur de Chambre de Namur. Prior to the concert, they will be recording the CD of the opera at deSingel. But it’s far better to experience it live, right?
