A musical bomb! That's the best way to describe Monteverdi's 'Vespro della Beata Vergine'. In it, you can discover the many sides to his genius: imposing choral singing in the overwhelming 'Magnificat', duets in the style of the old madrigals and a whole palette of intimate solo singing, duet singing and virtuoso instrumental passages. He wrote 'Vespro della Beata Vergine' during his stay in Mantua. This masterly work is a milestone in the history of early seventeenth-century church music, and combines stylistic traits of both the prima prattica - in other words, the old, archaic style like the mass with which the work begins - and of the secunda prattica - the modern, revolutionary style that has become Monteverdi's trademark.
Since 2005, Leonardo García Alarcón, once assistant to Gabriel Garrido, has been exploring the world of the baroque with his ensemble Cappella Mediterranea, from Frescobaldi to Handel and Bach. In 2010 he also became artistic director of the Chœur de Chambre de Namur, a choir that has a wealth of experience in early music. This is therefore the ideal team to highlight for you both the spiritual and the overwhelming side of Monteverdi's masterpiece.
