The young French-Swiss pianist Cédric Pescia is our trump card for the new season. His illuminating recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations (Claves) is in our opinion one of the greatest revelations of the last few years. Pescia doesn't strive for virtuoso effects, but gives an unusually poetic and inner interpretation. In the first part of the concert, Pescia performs music by French composers all mixed together. This combination of 'old' and 'new' works surprisingly well. The capricious miniatures by Couperin are echoed in the ornithological sounds of Messiaen and contrast beautifully with the slow moving tonal palette of Debussy. In the second part of the concert, Pescia combines Schumann's wayward 'Davidsbündlertänze' with several playful miniatures from Kurtag's 'Jatekok'.
