The Chamber Orchestra of Europe is a welcome guest at Belgian concert halls. This time, its conductor David Afkham combines the cream of Europe’s musicians with Collegium Vocale Gent for a concert in which magic triumphs.
Inspired by a poem by Goethe about heathen rituals, Felix Mendelssohn composed ‘Die erste Walpurgisnacht’, a large-scale cantata for chorus, orchestra and soloists.
Equally mystical are Franz Liszt’s ‘Two episodes from Lenau’s ‘Faust’’, in which Liszt sketches a story of an intellectual who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for unbounded knowledge.
Mozart’s 25th Piano Concerto is an ambitious statement in terms of its emotion and grandeur. In the hands of Pierre-Laurent Aimard, one of today’s most celebrated pianists, this promises to be an enchanting experience!
