Young cellist Julia Hagen makes a fantastic debut at the Concertgebouw with Dmitri Shostakovich's whimsical Second cello concerto. De Volkskrant
Beethoven with Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Sibelius with Paavo Berglund or Mozart operas with Yannick-Nézet Séguin. These are just a few great recordings from the glorious history of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. In Antwerp they embrace a Russian theme with Schumann’s Cello Concerto as an interlude. This work was never performed during Schumann's lifetime, but later gained near cult status thanks to the mysterious middle section. With the young cellist Julia Hagen we serve up the ideal performer. In his Symphony No. 1, Prokofiev shows his almost neoclassical side. As if he is a modern Haydn: playful and spontaneous. Things are slightly different with Shostakovich's Chamber Symphony. This work is an adaptation for string orchestra by Rudolf Barshai of the String Quartet No. 8, a masterpiece that will certainly sound haunting in the hands of the emerging conductor Valentin Uryupin.
Tradition and innovation come together in this opening concert, a promising kick-off to a new musical season at DE SINGEL.
