This concert is the climax of the Labo/Praxis project, a Laboratory for Contemporary Music. This specialisation project for students from the instrument and/or composition masterclasses is an initiative by Champ d'Action, deSingel and Antwerp Conservatory. In workshops, lectures, presentations, and so on, students can follow contemporary performance practice from very close up throughout the academic year. The legendary Slovenian composer Vinko Globokar (b. 1934) is the central focus. The main part of this concert is the powerful ensemble piece entitled 'Eisenberg'. This lends itself well to performance by the musicians of Champ d'Action, and is the ensemble is supplemented by one or more students per instrument group. Experienced musicians in the ensemble, such as cellist Arne Deforce, clarinetist Jaan Bossier, percussionist Fedor Teunisse and pianist Yutaka Oya lead these groups. Depending on the results of the Labo/Praxis project, one or more students will get the chance to perform an extra piece by Globokar.
For this concert, Champ d'Action also commissioned a work from Richard Barrett (b. 1959). This British composer is known especially for his electro-acoustic compositions. Given that in their programme Champ d'Action are focusing on the use of electronics, he is the ideal composer.
