In a time when the laptop and the smartphone are driving us ever further into cyberspace, it is more than relevant to take another penetrating look at the initial and surprisingly fresh experiments with digital art.
Barely forty years ago, the American artist Lillian Schwartz made one of the very first computer-generated films, 'Pixellation', a milestone in digital video art; she used the computer to build up images pixel by pixel. Talking about it, she said, "Artists must express their own creative character in the technology of their era in order to find their own historical and individual level."
It is a credo that applies equally to the American computer-music pioneer James Tenney, who was a few years ahead of Schwarz with his electronic compositions 'Ergodos I' and 'II'. Similarly, he transforms the sound into sound pixels that bring to mind the world of today's glitch music. Moreover, he gives these electronic compositions 'instrumental responses': human performers entering into dialogue with the sound tapes.
Champ d'Action and the improvisation collectief reFLEXible link these two visionary artists together in this project, in which visual and auditory elements are equal partners.
