In 1827 Franz Schubert completed his 'Winterreise', the monumental song cycle where the solitary protagonist, deprived of his love, house and home, wanders towards his death in a less than cheery winter landscape. Since its original setting, its arrangement for tenor and piano has been tampered with more than once. For instance, the conductor-composer Hans Zender replaced the piano with a chamber orchestra in his 1993 'composed interpretation' and the deaf actor Eyrie Dittrich settled upon the idea of a version with sign language in 2007. Since 2008, the world has been a 'Winterreise' richer, due to the Canadian wind quintet Pentaèdre. The oboist Normand Forget arranged the original piano accompaniment for flute, clarinet, bassoon and horn and, what's more, added an accordion. On paper, that would normally raise a few eyebrows, but the reality proved otherwise. Particularly when our beloved Christoph Prégardien puts on his 'wandering' shoes for the occasion.
