The film ‘On the Waterfront’ won eight Oscars, and still stands proudly in eighth place in the prestigious American National Film Institute’s top 100. A year later, the entire soundtrack was made into a six-part suite, and this is still regarded as one of the monuments of American classical music. There is even more colourful film music in the jazzy blockbuster ‘An American in Paris’. In it, you hear Gershwin’s own impressions as a tourist in the city of light. We stay in the United States with the masterpiece by ‘temporary American immigrant’ Antonin Dvorak. In his Ninth Symphony, ‘From the New World’, he presents a symbolic ode to his new place of residence. For this thoroughly American programme, we present a dream combination with a rich tradition: the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and its French Music Director Louis Langrée.
