1h 15' Mata Hari: in peacetime she was a celebrated erotic dancer, desired by the continent’s most powerful men; yet in wartime these same men mercilessly executed her as an alleged spy. What was going on in the heads of her admirers and her executioners? And why are we still unable to get to the bottom of her mystery?
In this theatrical Lieder recital, Mata Hari’s story is told from the perspective of the many men in her life (and those interested in it retrospectively) by actors on a film screen. Soprano Claron McFadden and pianist Claire Chevallier respond with music by Mata Hari’s contemporaries, and letters from the infamous dancer herself. ‘Façade: the World of Mata Hari’ is being created to mark the hundredth anniversary of the death of Mata Hari, the stage name of the Frisian Margaretha Geertruida ‘Grietje’ Zelle (1876-1917).
