introduction Stephan Weytjens . 7.15pm . Music Studio
In July 1610, Monteverdi published the Marian Vespers, his first collection of religious music. With a courtly bow, the collection bids farewell to the Renaissance and cheerfully heralds the future. A multitude of innovations enrich and refine the existing forms. Patterns merge, with old and new melting into religious music that at times sounds positively erotic. Equally, this is a monumental arrangement with vocals that at times expand to ten voices split between two choirs. The score allows for plenty of freedom as to exactly how the accompaniment is expressed. This demands great skill and insight from the performers, and in the right hands the music can be colourful and varied. Philippe Herreweghe is unparalleled in his ability to encourage his musicians to act as one. The orchestra is a living, breathing organism that collaborates with the singers rather than accompanying them. In this way, he always pierces right to the emotional heart of the music. And rest assured – he really hits the nail on the head.
