Philippe Herreweghe seems to penetrate ever deeper into the essence of the St Matthew Passion. The intense performances therefore sound almost self-evident. One of the absolute highlights of this concert is Reinoud Van Mechelen. The expressive tenor kicks off in the supporting role of evangelist. Bass-baritone Florian Boesch, countertenor Tim Mead and familiar voices such as Dorothee Mields and Peter Kooij complete the picture. Bach’s compelling tale of Christ’s gruesome death will unfold in its full splendour.
