The rich oeuvre of Bernardo Pasquini is virtually unknown. The ‘Il San Vito’ oratorio, for example, was not performed for 300 years. Was this fair? This religious story sounds as passionate as a Scarlatti opera. A strict, imposing king, an imperturbable hero and a violently smitten passionara. Rejected love is transformed into vicious hatred. Alessandro Quarta perfectly understands this music and injects rhythmic suppleness into the dramatic action. Rage, compassion, rebellion and calm resignation,… his singers and orchestra follow the emotional trajectory with aplomb. A modest discovery that will stay with you.
