Cuarteto Casals is one of the leading quartets of our time, from baroque to contemporary.
To our great regret, Artemis Quartett recently decided to bid farewell to the concert stage for an indefinite period after a career spanning more than 30 years. We are delighted that the Spanish Cuarteto Casals, who are also at the very highest level, were prepared to come and replace Artemis. Your tickets will remain valid for the replacement programme.
Founded in 1997, Cuarteto Casals has grown to become one of the leading quartets of our era, and a regular guest on the international concert stages and at festivals. Their repertoire stretches from baroque and classical (with the use of historic bows) to romantic and contemporary. These four musicians demonstrate their mastery of versatility in this richly varied programme.
Mozart dedicated a series of six string quartets to his friend Haydn. The second (KV421) sounds balanced and crystal clear: the highpoint of the classical string quartet. Schumann’s String Quartets Opus 41 appeared after a long period of studies in counterpoint, and analysis of scores by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. When Clara was given the three quartets for her birthday, she wrote: “Everything about them is new, but delicately incorporated and entirely in the style of the string quartet”.
With his Fünf Sätze, in 1909 Anton Webern wrote one of the key works from his quartet oeuvre. Finely chased filagree work down to the last square millimetre, in which every note is afforded maximum expressiveness.
