Cuong Vu Trio - Flat Earth Society - Peter Vermeersch
The Armstrong Mutations
The trio of Cuong Vu and Flat Earth Society (FES) of Peter Vermeersh will embark on a journey into the unknown with the trumpet as the guiding instrument. They are bound to catch the listener on the wrong foot. For people who think in categories things might get a bit confusing. This is jazz, or Rock jazz, or Fusion or Crossover, or composed music too many boundaries are trespassed and simultaneously swept aside. Musical citation is an important element of the music of Cuong Vu and FES. Musical citation is an important element of the music of Cuong Vu and FES. They sample fragments from musical history and incorporate them into their compositions and improvisations, which become part of the musical narrative - employed frugally and concisely over time, or energetically and complex on occasion. Musical figures join forces and sometimes go off on tangents, in an uncensored musical recycling, with a subtle use of electronic effects, beyond the boundaries of beautiful and ugly, serious and ridiculous ... In 'The Armstrong Mutations' FES pursues the Satchmo the macho, the blues, the street parade and the indomitable vitality of the gospel, the evergreen and jungle jazz. Their tempo is contemporary, no endless solos, but abrupt knight's moves like on a chessboard.
