Imagine an aristocratic salon in Vienna in the late 18th century. The string trio – violin, viola and cello – was hugely popular there at that time. The young Beethoven composed five pieces in the genre. Above all, the three String Trios, Opus 9, are true gems, and are equal to his early string quartets and piano trios. While his very first string trios follow the conventional classical form, in the Opus 9 trios Beethoven increasingly allows idiosyncrasies to creep in. With Sepec, Zimmermann and Queyras – true Beethoven aficionados – we are given a clear and exhilarating insight into the laboratory of Beethoven’s imagination.
