Trumpeter Dave Douglas makes use of a variety of styles, atmospheres and line-ups. With 'Magic Circle', starting out from a predominantly acoustic concept - trumpet, violin and bass - he asserts himself through his warm, relaxed, subtle, chamber jazz-like way of playing. Dave Douglas is a universally respected trumpet player and composer and is also a multiple winner of the Downbeat Critics' poll and the Downbeat Readers' poll. His long spun-out themes, collective improvisations and trumpet solos define the pieces. However, he also leaves enough room for individual contributions from the other musicians. Scott Colley is a master bassist: good drive, beautiful sound and great lines. As a soloist, he more than holds his own. Violinist Mark Feldman stands for quality. During his solos, he tells a real story whilst maintaining the suspense. The teamwork of the trio remains tight in all circumstances because they keep a close eye on the group dynamic. Douglas, Feldman and Colley fuse together traditional and more contemporary styles in optima forma.
