In 'Spark of Being' the film-maker Bill Morrison reinterprets the Frankenstein myth. Morrison, winner of a number of Bessie and Obie awards, devises hypnotic collages of half-decomposed film material from the early twentieth century. This results in blood-curdling visual effects, rather like what you see in 'Decasia'. Morrison has already worked with composers such as John Adams, Bill Frisell, Henryk Gorecki, Steve Reich and Michael Gordon for what he defines as: 'cinematographic symphony films, full of lyricism'.
In 'Spark of Being', Morrison and Douglas create a film concert that examines the relationship between man and technology. The musical range includes written compositions, non-idiomatic improvisation and computer-generated sounds. One could describe the entire piece as 'jazz-ambient-groove' with film.
Dave Douglas is 'DownBeat Artist of the Year', artistic director of the 'jazz & creative music' workshop in Banff (Canada) and a member of John Zorn's Masada. Keystone combines jazz with electronic and diverse contemporary musical styles. The group was set up specially to provide live new music for classical as well as experimental films.
