introduction Piet De Volder and Piet Van Bockstal . 7.15pm . Conference room
Ever wondered if the magical northern light has an influence on the music of composers from Finland and Denmark? During this concert, deFilharmonie gives us an answer to this question. On the bill is the 'Sinfonia espansiva' by Carl Nielsen and an oboe concert by Kalevi Aho which has been specially written for the occasion. Piet Van Bockstal, generally regarded as Belgium's best oboist and familiar with Aho's work, is performing the piece for the first time. Typical for Aho is an abundance of everything. He writes extremely large-scale works, uses a multitude of styles and has co-written an impressive list of symphonic works. Stylistically, he can be included under the neo-classicists, although he has also written modernist and post-modernist works. How Piet Van Bockstal's work will sound is, for the time being, still an open question but one whose answer will certainly be worth the trouble of finding out! How Nielsen's 'Sinfonia espansiva' (1911) will sound is something we definitely can tell you. It is not for nothing that this is Nielsen's most successful symphony. This work perfectly captures the sound of the vastness and openness of the north. In the slow section, you can drift away on the endless melodies.
