Do you know the symphonic works of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies? Virtually everything this grand old man of the British music scene sets down on paper carries the promise of delightful listening pleasure. With just a simple triad, we are on the edge of our seats. You must come and listen to this concert, which he will be conducting himself.
deFilharmonie roll out the red carpet for the now seventy-five year old 'Sir Max' and his latest violin concerto, with the star violinist Daniel Hope in tow. The composer also conducts his Fifth Symphony, an eclectic orchestral work drawing from his own scores, two Gregorian chants and music by Jean Sibelius. The island of Hoy, one of the Orkney Islands situated to the north east of Scotland, where Davis has lived since 1971, inspired him to write 'An Orkney wedding, with sunrise'. In addition, Davies pays homage to his favourite music: Bernstein's Divertimento. The maestro's tribute to the Elizabethan renaissance, the grandeur of Strauss, Tchaikovsky's lyricism, Beethoven's tragedy, samba and salsa rhythms, Schoenberg series and American fanfare music. What more could you wish for?
