Perhaps Dejan Lazic is known to you as the established partner to the cellist Pieter Wispelwey. You will probably have noticed that Lazic draws more out of the score than the average accompanist. At the duo's last concert in deSingel two years ago during our last Beethoven Happening, Lazic attracted our attention to such an extent that we spontaneously invited him to give a solo recital. Dejan Lazic has created a programme especially for us where the 'the old' and the 'the new' are placed side by side. It remains to be seen whether Lazic has chosen to make a contrast or rather to make a link between Mozart and Britten, Scarlatti and Bartók. Like Britten and Bartók, Mozart and Scarlatti were also innovators of their time. Mozart's Thirteenth Sonata is harmonic as well as rigid in form. Domenico Scarlatti experimented to his heart's content with risky dissonance and unusual sound effects in his more than five hundred and fifty sonatas. As a pianist, Benjamin Britten was legendary for unrivalled interpretations of Mozart. Scarlatti's sonatas have their educational function as well as their folkloric inspiration, in common with Bartók's collection of 'Mikrokosmos'.
