With Beethoven and Dvořák, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and the leading young British conductor Robin Ticciati have chosen two major figures from the symphonic repertoire. They’ve also selected two full-blown masterpieces whose popularity is richly deserved.
In his Ninth Symphony ‘From the New World’, the ‘temporary American immigrant’ Antonín Dvorák presents a symbolic ode to his new home. The American Dream does not seem far off in the captivating Largo or the booming finale.
It would only become clear a few decades after the critically received creation of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in 1806 that here the classical concerto completely merges with the Romantic aesthetic. The symphonic allures of this lengthy concerto transport the listener into a tale that is brimming with pathos and drama. The Norwegian star violinist Vilde Frang performs this lively masterpiece with verve.
