Dietrich Henschel - Christian Tetzlaff - Tanja Tetzlaff - Lars Vogt
In a letter to his fiancée Clara Wieck, Robert Schumann (1810-1856) called his 'Liederkreis, opus 39' his most romantic cycle, in which he had included many personal emotions and experiences. On 15th May 1840 he completed this cycle of twelve Lieder based on poems by Eichendorff. Schumann drew from several collections of poems, as a result of which the Lieder cycle has no real unity of progression. Rather, the successive Lieder are held together by recurring images or contrasting voices such as longing and hope, loss and estrangement, melancholy and joy, memory and the past. A quotation from the second Lied, 'Dein Bildnis wunderselig', reappears in the first movement of the Second Piano Trio, from 1849. Schumann's Third Trio was written in 1851 and represents his late style, which has often been the subject of criticism. Nevertheless, in this piece the composer achieved his long-pursued ideal: the complete independence of the three instruments and a thematic unity across all movements.
Due to illness, the baritone Bo Skovhus will not be able to perform as announced. He will be replaced by Dietrich Henschel.
