Kris Defoort
Kris Defoort (°1959) is best known both for his improvisations and as a jazz composer. He does have his roots in the so-called classical sphere as part of his 'heritage'. He passed through rock music and discovered jazz. The way it looks now, he is returning to his origins. After the performance of his opera 'The Woman Who Walked into Doors' in deSingel in November 2001, his next point of departure was a project focussing on music of the Renaissance. He had come full circle.
The composer's intention is to enter into a dialogue with the past. Defoort views musical history in terms of a slowly, but infinitely moving spiral: "My writing aims to view the present and the past from different perspectives, in order to create a kind of mobility from various points of view. A mirror of truth, always on a journey between your present and your past, or its reflection (interpretation), which includes an imaginary projection into the future - a future which again is composed of the past and the present."
Just as with his opera, Defoort looked for a synthesis between classical music and the world of improvisation, between classical and jazz musicians, between old and new, between conservation and conversation.
