Australian soprano Eleanor Lyons was music to our ears as a soloist in the ‘Requiem’ during the Verdi happening. A strikingly beautiful voice that we look forward to hearing in its full glory in a lied recital. She has opted for repertoire from the turn of the century, during the transition from the Late Romanic period to Modernism.
The key discovery will be the lieder of Frederick Delius, a good friend of Grieg under whose influence he composed 62 glittering gems in the lied genre. Prokofjev’s Five Lieder, Opus 35 became famous in the version for violin and piano. At the basis lie five vocalises for voice and piano, varying from dreamy and delicate to sarcastic and turbulent. The vocal work of Rachmaninov is quite simply the most introspective, dramatic part of his musical legacy.
