Minimal Music - Now and Then
In the early period of minimal music, few critics expected it to last long. It was believed that the extreme simplicity of the style was a passing whim. Three decades later, however, we are seeing that the pioneering minimalist works from the 1960s and 1970s are being enthusiastically rediscovered by a younger generation of musicians. Furthermore, the achievements of this style remain a source of inspiration for composers today.
This concert brings together minimal music from two periods: the radical approach of the 1970s and the freer postminimalism of the 1990s, including works by composers from both sides of the Atlantic.
The concise 'Music for Pieces of Wood' by Steve Reich is a short study in systematics, with a single rhythmic motif.
In the restless, raw rhythmicality of 'Worker's Union', Louis Andriessen created a political message by giving the musicians individual freedom while at the same time inciting musical unity.
The work by the young Amsterdam Cypriot Yannis Kyriakides fits well alongside the music by Louis Andriessen, with whom Kyriakides also studied.
