Fans and those in the know are aware that Ensemble Intercontemporain excels at interpreting ground-breaking new musical compositions. During this concert, you will be lucky enough to witness this again at first hand.
As well as a creation by the young composer Yves Chauris, you will discover how Luigi Dallapiccola arrived at his own personal style by combining neo-classicism with dissonance. His 'Piccola Musica Notturna' recalls a deserted village square, fascinating listeners with a sublime solitude expressed in sound.
'Lied der Waldtaube' seizes your imagination in a different way. Arnold Schoenberg reworked this song from his 'Gurre-Lieder' for chamber orchestra. Dark passions set the tone of this exceptionally melodious, expressive and almost symmetrical piece. An intense experience that the late romantic 'Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen' by Gustav Mahler also has in store for you. In it, a spurned lover tries to obliterate his sadness with a flight through nature, set to chromatic melodies. And for the listener, mezzo-soprano Susan Graham is perfect company.
