Ensemble Matheus olv. Jean-Christophe Spinosi
Vivaldi - De Vier Jaargetijden, Corelli, Händel
The four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi are baroque evergreens, but we only too rarely focus on the high musical quality of these four violin concertos. Far more important than the unprecedented virtuoso writing for the soloist are Vivaldi’s imagination and the original way he creates the parts without any repetition. Today, the work is so etched in our minds that it is difficult to listen to it with new ears. The great appeal of the pieces is that they tell a story: Vivaldi sets to music four sonnets that he probably wrote himself.
Violinist Jean-Christophe Spinosi and Ensemble Matheus are passionate advocates of the contemporary interpretation of Vivaldi. Their unprecedented precision in true Venetian timbres delights the audience with its ‘irreverent’ energy. They conclude the programme with Corelli’s Christmas Concerto and the Overture to Handel’s opera ‘Xerxes’.
