Ensemble Mosaik & Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart olv. Enno Poppe
Interzone . Lieder und Bilder
The performance ‘Interzone’ (2003/2004), by the German composer Enno Poppe and the Flemish video artist Anne Quirynen is a real spectacle. In it, songs and images from the twilight zone conjure up an in-between world that intensifies reality. De Standaard described it as ‘an intriguing performance in which enigmatic images and texts are interwoven with brooding, refined music. Poppe is a young leading light of the new music.’ This is a composer who excels at creating surrealistic sound paintings and unusual instrumentations, reminiscent of those of Harry Partch and Frank Zappa.
‘Interzone’ is based on the ideologies of William S. Burroughs and in his eponymous book. Burroughs describes the Moroccan city of Tangiers as a haven for artists; an artificial world that takes on an almost mythical status. Poppe and Quirynen use this twilight zone for adventurers as the starting point for a monumental work for voice, chamber ensemble, vocalists and video. The voice of Omar Ebrahim and the vocal acrobatics of the Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart play a central role; and these in combination with Ensemble Mosaik and Anne Quirynen’s images sweep you relentlessly towards a ‘Brave New World’.
This is your first opportunity to see this performance in Belgium, in a co-presentation with the Transit Festival Leuven.
