Astounding Vespers; dynamically and movingly performed by Pichon's Pygmalion Ensemble.
Gramophone described the recording of Monteverdi's Vespro della Beata Vergine by the energetic choir and orchestra Pygmalion from French star conductor Raphaël Pichon as 'one of the most impressive and moving recordings ever made’. Monteverdi wrote his Vespers for the Blessed Virgin at around the end of the 16th century. The collection, which was published in 1610, comprises compositions relating to the Catholic evening prayer, vespers. As Monteverdi also wrote the work as a covert application to the Papal chapel in Rome, he used an abundance of styles and forms. The Vespers for the Blessed Virgin is therefore not only a masterful work, but also a showcase of the music of that period. In Pichon’s acclaimed interpretation, the magnificent Laudate pueri sounds like a film score avant la lettre and the Magnificat like the music to a Stanley Kubrick film. While musicologists are still uncertain as to how exactly Monteverdi’s Vespers should be performed, Pygmalion simply goes to the heart of the matter, playing beautiful and powerfully emotional music that touches everyone’s heart.
