Beethoven meets the Mediterranean crisis; a moving, provocative concert.
In this concert, Ensemble Resonanz, led by top Italian conductor Riccardo Minasi, delves into the heroic music of Beethoven's Third Symphony, the ‘Eroica’, one of the absolute highlights of Western music history. The composer initially wanted to dedicate the revolutionary work to Napoleon, but furiously scratched the commission when the latter turned out to be a vulgar power-hungry man. The European ideal echoed in this symphony is accompanied by testimonies from people who were on board SeaWatch 3, a ship deployed to rescue refugees in the Mediterranean. These will be recited by Seckou Ouologuem, slam poet, rapper, writer, theatre-maker and the former city poet of Antwerp. Over 200 years later, the ‘Eroica’ also still sounds fresh, innovative, bold and energetic, not least thanks to the lively and dynamic playing of Ensemble Resonanz. This German orchestra can call itself orchestra in residence of DE SINGEL this season. An honour they owe to their high quality and their lived-in way of playing music.
