The skilled violin playing of Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber was unprecedented for his time, but also for ours. He combined this talent with an experimental drive that is equally remarkable. An anthology of his ‘Rosary Sonatas’ is the perfect opener for a series on violin virtuosity in the Baroque era. With his ‘scordatura’ technique, in which the violin strings are tuned differently from normal, he managed to create unprecedented timbres and effects. Star violist Ariadne Daskalakis recently made a brilliant recording of this music with the Ensemble Vintage Köln. All excellent reasons for inviting them to perform a programme that includes two beautiful sonatas by Johann Sebastian Bach and a harpsichord suite by Johann Caspar Ferdinand Fischer.
