Unique bagpipe interpretation of minimal music, hypnotic and extraordinarily enriching
Describing Erwan Keravec as a pioneer does not do him justice. The Scottish bagpipe player has been putting his instrument on the map in a unique manner for years. He uses the tradition of the bagpipes from different countries to explore music that you would not immediately associate with the bagpipes. After ending up at the work Two Pages by Philip Glass, he realised that minimal music - with its drones and repetitive melodic figures - fitted perfectly with the bagpipes. This led to a unique event that is now also coming to THE SINGEL. They perform In C by Terry Riley, often regarded as the basis for minimal music, in a unique way with twenty different wind instruments. The musicians form a big circle on the Red Hall stage. As a spectator, you take your place in the centre, and you are allowed to wander around freely. An otherworldly experience. ‘We hear string players, and we know that they are not there. We hear light while we know that our eyes are closed. I cannot say how long we have already been here, but I absolutely don’t want it ever to stop’, is how a reviewer from Radio France Culture attempted to put the experience in words.
