Escher Quartet
Mozart, Barber, Grieg
With a well-chosen name, an ensemble immediately makes it clear what it stands for. The Escher Quartet from New York is inspired by the Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher. More specifically, by his process of interaction between individual components that together form a whole. This is the perfect definition of chamber music!
The tone is immediately set with Mozart’s Quartet in A major. In it, Mozart’s counterpoint deepening of the sonata form achieves absolute perfection. Edvard Grieg also considered the string quartet a good learning experience. With his only quartet he wanted to ‘fight through the large forms, whatever the cost’. And he succeeded wonderfully well. Finally, the Escher Quartet also plays American music: Samuel Barber’s String Quartet. The second part will definitely be familiar. Its adaptation for string orchestra, the famous ‘Adagio for Strings’, made Barber immortal.
