Interview with Peter Vermeersch
For 'Avantgardski', the Flat Eart Society starts with Stravinsky's 'Ebony Concerto', one of the best examples of the interaction between classical and jazz. The second major piece is the '10 Märsche', which Mauricio Kagel wanted to sound like a village brass band suffering from colds and playing off key. Perfect for the Flat Earth Society! Ligeti's '6 Bagatellen' and Poulenc's 'Rapsodie nègre' are radical works largely inspired by folklore. As Vermeersch says: 'We look for the cuckoo's eggs of 20th-century music, music for which there is a score, but which is rarely played. Like 'Intersections' by Tom Dissevelt, bassist with the radio orchestra The Skymasters.' When you have added a number of radical compositions by Vermeersch himself, what you get is 'Avantgardski'.
