The German film director Ernst Lubitsch (1892-1947) made 'The Oyster Princess' in 1919. His first films are typified by a subtle and ironic humour, perfect timing and visual virtuosity. No wonder Hollywood welcomed him with open arms several years later. He was even able to make the transition into talking films quite nonchalantly, whereas for several other directors it was fatal. Lubitsch leaves us with several sublime classics such as 'Heaven can't wait' (1943), 'The Shop around the Corner' (1940) and 'Ninotchka' (1939).
'The Oyster Princess' is a dazzling satire about the hilarious wedding of the daughter of an extremely wealthy oyster magnate. It is not simply a comedy, but a pointed satire on the lifestyle of the nouveau riche. The brilliant and at times absurd humour leaves a bittersweet aftertaste.
For the recent restoration of the film Peter Vermeersch wrote a new soundtrack. It is performed live with the film by the Flat Earth Society. Anyone who has ever heard Vermeersch's somewhat eccentric big band knows they can expect an evening of unpretentious and frivolous performance pleasure. The same applies to this film score, where the pictures and music always remain in balance. The live synchronisation runs perfectly. The music sometimes illustrates the film and is sometimes in contrast with it. But at all times a gentle madness prevails that makes this 'Oyster Princess' unforgettable.
