Flat Earth Society - Uri Caine
Uri Craine Project
The American pianist and composer Uri Caine works primarily on the New York avant-garde jazz scene, with artists such as John Zorn and Dave Douglas, to name only the most famous. In recent years, Caine has caused a furore, certainly in Europe, with his uniquely personal arrangements of music by Mahler, Bach and Beethoven. For each work, he uses the basic structure of the piece in order to rework it in his extremely personal idiom, rooted in the recent wave of Jewish music from New York, of which he could safely be called a key figure.
After meeting Peter Vermeersch in New York, Uri Caine became very interested in the work of Flat Earth Society and was happy to accept their proposal for collaboration. For the 'Uri Caine Project', the two composers worked together to write a full evening's repertory. They exchanged raw material in order to adapt it further, wrote their own versions of one another's existing pieces and developed new material. Sounds promising...
