Festivaldag 1
Robin Verheyen will set the ball rolling with his solo performance on soprano sax at this three-day jazz event that sets great store by adventure and innovation. In 'Soprano' this Flemish New Yorker plays more wildly and vehemently than in his work on the tenor sax. Not yet thirty, Verheyen is already a firm fixture on the Belgian jazz scene.
In 2010 the Dutch trumpeter Sanne Van Hek was 'improviser in residence' in Moers. During that time the foundations were laid for her band 'Network of Stoppages'. An idiosyncratic synthesis of jazz, contemporary music, avant-garde metal, noise, hip-hop, pop and improvisation.
The Spanish pianist and master improviser Agusti Fernandez follows solo. He was a student of Iannis Xenakis and Carles Santos. Cecil Taylor was his great inspiration on the piano.
The opening day of the festival will be rounded off by Gerry Hemingway and his Riptide Quintet. This American quintet is a perfectly balanced ensemble: intensely focused and down-to-earth, a chamber music ensemble with the spirit of a street band.
