Welcome to the Montmartre of the nineteen thirties: music that inspires you to dance, play and dream. Pianists Frank Braley and Eric Le Sage perform Poulenc with graceful ‘je-ne-sais-quoi’: playfully and supplely, surprisingly and changeably. With a perfectly timed wink, a warm dash of ‘eau de vie’ and an elegant cloud of cigar smoke.
If Poulenc happily wove together jazz, Mozartian melodies and rhythms from the Balinese gamelan in his concerto, then Milhaud preferred to seek inspiration in Brazil. The sultry rhythms of Rio de Janeiro act as the musical horizon of a ballet that enjoys colouring outside the lines of reality.
Gershwin wanted to be taken seriously as a classical composer on the other side of the ocean, but primarily prospered on Broadway. His opera Porgy and Bess is the absolutely brilliant result of this straddling.
