The Double Quartet draws on the classic recording sessions 'Ascension' and 'Free Jazz', building blocks for exciting concerts that leave no room for boredom. Frank Gratkowski does not reconstruct the music of John Coltrane or Ornette Coleman, but freely reinterprets and develops their creations. What is so amazing about Gratkowski is the fact that he has only been playing for about ten years. He is a clear-minded musician with a formidable memory, who absorbs everything he hears. His playing of alto sax and clarinet is powerful, gripping, and emotional. Let's say intelligent. Just like Coltrane and Coleman, he writes compositions that sound as if they have grown organically. They are melodious, but also peculiar and trance-inducing. The musicians play with extreme concentration and their interaction seems to take place on an extrasensory level. Dynamics, the sense of timbre, structure and rhythm are all perfectly balanced. And like all ideal music, it occasionally verges on pure silence. The musicians never lose themselves in details, and hold the audience spellbound from beginning to end.
