'Beginning with music, continuing otherwise', the title of an article in the journal RTRSRCH, was what led directly to '492 kilo'. This comprises nine contributions from European 'musical artists' with roots in the 1970s, a challenge to the concept of music and here in a concert performance by pianist Frederik Croene. '492 kilo' groups nine approaches to the 492-kg classic instrument, the piano. Matthew Shlomowitz juxtaposes piano sounds with animal sounds and furious guitar-playing. Falk Hübner dresses the piano up in pictures. David Helbich plans an intervention with the public. Frederik Croene transforms the necessary technical switches into a fully fledged part of the performance. Marianthi Papalexandri-Alexandri interacts with sound artist Pe Lang. Laura Maes plays with the sound colour of both the piano and an ice sculpture. Stefan Prins places the pianist between the strings and sound-box of the grand piano and the computer-controlled circuits of the midi piano. Cathy van Eck regards the piano as a piece of furniture. Come and see it all! And open your ears!
