1h B’Rock Orchestra and Andreas Küppers with a range of baroque works about life and death.
“Where shall my soul repose, now that the sun has veiled its light and bid the world goodnight?” This question from Purcell’s ‘An evening hymn’ leads B’Rock Orchestra through Andreas Küppers through a selection of baroque compositions in which life and death take centre stage. Purcell sings about the tragedy of loss in ‘Dido and Aeneas’, whilst Johann Michael Bach expectantly looks forward to eternity in the motet ‘Herr, ich warte auf Dein Heil’. This Bach was the brother of Johann Christoph, and their uncle was Johann Sebastian’s grandfather. Johann Ludwig Bach was a distant nephew… Anyone who believed that German Protestantism or the English stiff upper lip put paid to strong emotions will discover during this concert the way in which each composer is able to tug on the heartstrings.
