6 gambists and 6 singers in a colourful tapestry of sound.
With the programme ‘Voyces & Viols’, the Hathor Consort and Pluto-ensemble dive into the world of ‘consort music’, a musical form from the transition period between the vocally-inspired English Polyphony and the Early Baroque English style. For the instrumental pieces, they selected from music by leading composers including Gibbons, Lupo and Tomkins. The latter was a pupil of William Byrd and the most brilliant upholder of his rich contribution to English polyphonic thinking. He was a good friend and fellow organist of Orlando Gibbons at the Royal Chapel, where he continued to make music until his death. Tomkins was the innovator in English music between Byrd and Purcell.
The Hathor Consort’s six gambists and Pluto-ensemble’s six singers weave these 17th-century sound lines into a fascinating and colourful tapestry of sounds.
