Pianist and composer Gerald Clayton made a name for himself with famous figures such as Roy Hargrove and Diana Krall, and in the meantime has become a star himself. He got his feeling for swing from an early age from his father, bassist John Clayton. The hip-hop of his own generation is another strong influence. The Blue Note label released his album Happening: Live at the Village Vanguard, which was immediately acclaimed. In 2019 Clayton was commissioned by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to compose the music for an exhibition about the work of Charles White. This influential artist and activist depicted the life of Afro-Americans, both in idealised portraits and in everyday scenes. He gave them dignity, humanity and heroism, in contrast to the long history of racial inequality. Together with a number of congenial musicians, Gerald Clayton presents a captivating tribute to Charles White.
