Gerardo Núñez grew up in Jerez de la Frontera and learnt to play flamenco guitar from Rafael Aguilar at a very early age. He turned out to have a natural gift and was already accompanying such singers as Terremoto de Jerez and José el de la Tomasa by the time he was fourteen. He was also highly esteemed by dancers. He played, for example, for Mario Maya, and above all for Carmen Cortés, who became one of his most important artistic partners.
Gerardo Núñez is currently considered one of the best guitarists in the world. He plays with virtuosity and great emotion, also with dazzling speed and a complete mastery of traditional flamenco genres.
But he is also very much appreciated as a composer. Rich and complex music that reveal a great listener and a deeply-rooted love of flamenco, even when he takes sidesteps into other genres.
At the last Seville biennale he left the audience breathless after an astonishing solo concert. But he feels just as much at home with his trio or, as in this concert, with his quintet.
