Beethoven’s late string quartets are a litmus test for every promising ensemble. The young wolves of the Goldmund Quartett get their teeth into the Quartet in B-flat Major, Opus 130 from which the mystical Cavatina is at this moment gliding through the universe in the space probe Voyager. Bach too touches upon the indescribable in the sublime interplay of his Kunst der Fuge. Master ironist Alfred Schnittke brews up an explosive cocktail that overshadows the entire quartet tradition: from Lassus to Beethoven to Shostakovich.
