All good things (including Schubert's fine songs) come to an end, alas. This season, the eminent speaker and pianist Graham Johnson rounds off his series of six lecture recitals on the Schubert song. In previous seasons, we hung on every word during his exceptionally absorbing expositions of 'Die schöne Müllerin' and 'Winterreise', and then again with Schubert's settings of poetry by Goethe and his circle of Viennese friends. This season, too, Graham Johnson once again brings us a little closer to the genius of Schubert, the 'Liederfürst'. April 2013 will see the publication of Johnson's long-awaited magnum opus: a Schubert song encyclopaedia in three hefty volumes. This is a reworking and expansion of all the highly interesting essays that Johnson has written during his lifetime. A 'must' for every Lieder buff!
