Due to COVID-19 and the quarantine measures in the United States, pianist Yuja Wang has unfortunately been obliged to cancel her European tour with the orchestra. The fantastic French pianist Bertrand Chamayou will replace her with bravura.
Star conductor François-Xavier Roth leads the musicians of Gürzenich-Orchester Köln in a challenging programme featuring Richard Strauss versus Igor Stravinsky. Bertrand Chamayou delivers the solo in Stravinsky’s swinging Concerto for Piano and Wind Instruments.
“The most terrible period in history has finally come to an end”, wrote Richard Strauss at the end of the Second World War. The ‘Metamorphosen’, composed during the darkest days, are a personal reflection on the total destruction caused by the war.
Stravinsky’s genius lay predominately in his original inventiveness. When he started on a Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in 1923, he came up with the idea of reducing the orchestra to a few wind instruments. The concerto premiered successfully at the Paris Opera in May 1924.
And the orchestra has a another surprising extra up its sleeve: singer-songwriter and cellist Ayanna Witter-Johnson will perform her song 'Unconditionally' with the orchestra. A celebration!
