The Hagen Quartet passionately brings Haydn and Janáček's intimate letters to life.
For more than forty years, the brothers Lucas and Clemens and their sister Veronika Hagen have been playing together. What started as a youthful family quartet with another sister -Angelika - in the ranks has become one of the most popular string quartets in the world. Also with Rainer Schmidt - the second violinist since 1987 - the four strings form a single entity, exactly as a string quartet should be. The Hagen Quartet plays the classics of the string quartet repertoire as one body. After a long absence, they return to DE SINGEL with two string quartets by Joseph Haydn. They contrast these with Leoš Janáček’s highly personal String Quartet No. 2. 'It is as though the work is cut from living flesh. I don't think I'll ever write anything with more depth, or more truthfulness,’ said the composer of the musical love letters to Kamila, who is almost forty years younger. A few weeks after the premiere, he died, happier than ever
